Ambitions for green active transport outlined in COVID-19 Transport Recovery Plan

9 June 2020

Draft plans have been published, setting out Brent Council’s ambitions for improving road safety, air quality and the health of local people.

Cllr Shama Tatler, Lead Member for Regeneration, Property and Planning, said : “COVID-19 has shone on a light on some stark health inequalities in our communities and we want to encourage residents to make healthier choices and become more active. “

By strengthening walking and cycling infrastructure across the borough and investing in initiatives like new low-traffic neighbourhoods, we hope to support and encourage a longer-term shift in the way people get around and help deliver a green recovery. There will be an opportunity to feed back on the plans and to share ideas for improving your area, so please keep an eye out for the details.”

Measures will include creating low traffic neighbourhoods, school streets, pop-up cycle lanes and bike parking, as well as further pavement-widening in town centres.

To fund these works, the Council has applied for £100,000 from the Department for Transport, and will be bidding for a portion of TfL’s £45 million London Streetspace Programme.

Residents and businesses will have the opportunity to share their views on the schemes during a consultation, details of which will be shared in due course.

The programme will be delivered over the short, medium and longer-term and will commence as funding becomes available.
